The NC Run and You're Done Bill: Flee from the Police and Have Your Car Seized

Governor Bev Purdue recently signed the “Run and You’re Done Bill”, which passed unanimously in the NC State House and Senate. The full text of the new Statute is available here.

Essentially, the bill will allow police to seize vehicles of suspects who flee from police and sell them at auction. Legally speaking, suspects charged with Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest will be subject to the new seizure law. The bill does contain an exception for an owner not involved in a chase that loaned his vehicle to a suspect.

The bill will also allow the seizure of vehicles involved in organized drag racing or habitual drunk driving cases. Any vehicle involved in illegal street racing or driven by an individual who has no license because of a revocation for DUI can ebe seized, regardless of whether it was involved in a Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest offense.

The new law will take effect December 1, 2011 in North Carolina.
