Penalty for Violating “Move Over” Law Increases

On December 1, 2019, the penalty increased for violating North Carolina’s “Move Over” law, the law that requires drivers to slow down or move over for stopped emergency vehicles.  If the driver fails to adhere to the “Move Over” law and the driver’s actions result in death or serious injury, prison time could now be a sentence for the violation.  The impetus for this change was the death of a Lumberton police officer who was struck and killed while investigating a car crash in December 2018.
